Clark Michigan

The name Michigan was used as a brand of the Clark Equipment Company for a line of wheel loader. The Clark company had taken over the Michigan Power Shovel Company in 1953. The Company became known as Clark-Michigan and was taken over by Volvo Group and merged with the Volvo BM division to form the VME Group in 1985. In 1995 VME America Inc. became Volvo Construction Equipment a subsidiary of Volvo AB.

In 1954 the first Michigan wheel loader was presented. Since then many different models ranging from small to large have been made. After the formation of VME group, the smaller loader models were phased out to make room for the smaller Volvo BM models. However, some of the smaller models were still produced during a period in Brazil. The brand name Clark Michigan was changed to Michigan with the creation of the VME Group in 1985.

In 1985 when the VME Group was established, the former brand of Clark Michigan was layed to rest and some of the products were renamed and was marketed under the Michigan brand. The smaller loaders in the previous company product line were phased out to pave way for the smaller Volvo BM loaders. However, production in Brazil of the smaller Michigan loaders was continued and sold on the local market for a period of time. For a while Volvo BM loaders were marketed under the Michigan brand in North America.
